Polio is an infectious disease that can cause paralysis or death, caused by the polio virus, which invades the nervous system.
The African Region of the World Health Organization (WHO) was certified as *FREE of indigenous wild poliovirus (WPV) in August 2020.*
However, in 2021, Nigeria reported 1028 cases of the circulating “vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVPV2)’“ strain of polio, and 170 cases in 2022. As of March 2024, Mali reported 15 cases of cVPV2, and Nigeria reported 8 cases.
