Just one day before its scheduled to enforce mandatory COVID-19 shots for all its residents, Austria will be ending its lockdowns for the unvaccinated.
The reasoning, according to Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer, is that hospital intensive care units are no longer “overstretched,” so lockdowns aren’t needed anymore. The mandatory shots rules are scheduled to go in effect February 1, 2022.
Officials’ reasoning for the mandatory vaccinations is the mandate is necessary because vaccination rates remain too low at 75.4%. ABC News said. Police will begin checking vaccination status in mid-March during routine stops. Those who can’t produce proof of vaccination could face a $676 fine.
