I’m still not sure what I think about the way that the designation that an animal or plant is sentient.
Yeah, right, plants too. If you’ve read The Secret Life of Plants, for instance, then you know of the experiments in which planets demonstrated what can only be described as fear in reaction to destruction of neighboring plants (laboratory) by humans.
So, an organism’s ability to feel pain, in particular, is not enough to declare one or the other is sentient.
If we make the determination based solely on animalhood and sensation, then we do not travel far before we arrive at the question of what can / must / should be our relationship with animals?
